This question is not intended to invoke argument regarding the fairness of Libby's sentencing. I am only asking for an opinion on the issue of pardon authority. This could apply to future or past pardons by any president past or present.

While I do support the presidents authority to pardon individuals from time to time, I do not think that he should be allowed to pardon members of his own cabinet. This seems to be a conflict of interest, because it removes any hope of accountability for criminal activity perpetrated within the white house itself. The way it stands, a president could have others commit crimes for him and simply pardon them later. I do not feel that members of the white house or the president are above the law. Do you agree or disagree ?

I will not award "best answer" for simply agreeing/disagreeing with me. You have to explain your position as to whether or not ANY president should be allowed to pardon members of their own cabinet.

I will not necessarily consider best answer, only for those who agree with me. I like being disagreed with, I just want an explanation of your position on the issue of pardon authority.

I agree and would take that a step further in stating the President shouldn't be allowed to pardon the past President or the past President's cabinet.

What was Scooter Libby convicted for? Lying to a grand jury about Vice President Dick Cheney telling him that Valire Plane worked for the CIA.

When President Clinton was in office didn't he lie to the grand jury to? Didn't he commit perjury, and was disbared from the Arkansas State Bar? Did he do 30 months in Jail?? Who pardoned Clinton? I guess if he didn't do it if Hillary is elected she'll take care of her man.

Did Gerald Ford pardon Richard Nixon?

He commuted the sentence. Its as good as a pardon, with a bit less bad PR than a pardon. Bush shouldn't have pardoned him -he should have made sure Scooter was charged with high treason. He should have charged his VP too...
