"Old School" is not really a time oriented term. It is more of a certain style. Saying, "I like old school," is not just saying you like a certain sound and style of the past. Some bands in the present play an "old school" style. For example... The Rolling Stones and Yardbirds of the 60's would be considered old school by many, then there was Aersosmtih of the 1970's that played a similar sound. Then you have Guns and Roses of the 80's with the similar style and sound of Aerosmith. It's not really a time thing, just a sound and style thing.

If it is from an earlier period of popular culture, then it could be considered old skool. For instance, the "new jack swing" era could be considered old skool. From that we established a new genre, hip-hop soul. Hip-hop soul is often viewed as "new skool" in comparison to the "new jack swing." A song is considered "old skool" when a new time period in popular culture begins and that song originated in the previous time period (a new technique or style defining an era). A song may be considered old but at the same time not considered to be old skool. There are also songs that blurr the line between old skool and new skool, timeless classics.

I'm still shocked to see my groups, Dru Hill, on "old-skool" type collections such as "20th Century Masters."

It probably was around 10 years or so, but the way the music industry moves nowadays, it may be six months!! This is such a down period, where it seems pop music has become stagnate, I still stick to about 10 years ---- but it seems to now be in a generic maze where a new category, no school, should be added.

If something was hot when you were 8-10 and you get to 25-30 and it is still talked about and enjoyed, it's old school. You're old, and you knew about it when you were at school.

"Old school is a slang term referring to old ways of thinking or acting, and to old objects in general, within the context of newer, more modern times. It generally does not have a negative connotation (cf. obsolete or out-dated). "

[edit] so to answer your question, I don't think there is a specific amount of time. It's just what goes out of style and is replaced by a more current trend.
