.......the standard of living in society today around financial issues? I am of the opinion that our country is heading for a serious fall. People are getting in so much debt because of the cost of living these days and I was wondering what others think on this matter. Also what do you think should be done to change the situation? Do you think that our current government is right or wrong in their policies around taxes etc and why do you think this? I am just looking for others opinions on the current state of our society from a financial perspective. I have heard that a very high percentage of our population is in serious debt and this is due to house prices rising and the cost of food, household bills etc!! What do you feel from your way of life, is good or bad about todays standard of living? Do you think that essential things such as food should be lowered in price etc? What do you think about the current government in general? (for/against and your reasons why) Thanks in advance

The fall has already started - recession is setting in - companies are cutting back - the first sign - making savings on operating costs - the second sign.

Gordon Brown is about to be exposed for all his lies

Hope you don't mind but I am not British.(South African) My spouse and I (both professional people) moved here 8 months ago so don't know much about British politics. However, in the short space of time I have been here, I have formed some opinions about the standard of living. House prices, petrol, council taxes, VAT and employment taxes are far higher here than in S.A. But one does get a lot back for your taxes, namely free schooling, free medical and a competent police force. Teachers are considerably better paid here and one can live on the minimum wage. We are surprised that ordinary workers such as tellers are able to travel abroad and that the majority of people have a decent standard of living. Jobs are easy to come by and our money in our monthly budget goes further here than back home, even though we have taken a huge financial knock moving here and setting up home from scratch. (We can't compare our house here to the one we had in S.A. though) What does concern me (perhaps in my ignorance) is how the governement is able to sustain supporting unwed moms, the dole, council estates, etc, and the fairness to the hard working tax payer. I am shocked at the amount of pregnant young girls as well as the amount of people choosing to have such large families!! If there was no financial support from the governenment, would people not think twice before having so many dependents? My feeling is that people should be responsible for their own financial situation (not getting aid from the government) and the governement should reduce tax putting more money back into the pockets of those who choose to work and have smaller families. (please forgive me if I have read the situation here incorrectly)

I think it's perfectly possible to live without debt by making wise investments, living frugally to save for what you want rather than relying on credit and being sensible about your goals in life. You can't blame everything on the Government although I will concede that they have made some bad decisions.

Heck, I didn't vote them in. And I have a lot of animosity for old Gordie Brun.

I think there may be a dip in the housing market but nothing like what happened in the eighties. But life will carry on and things will get better. Stop being so doom and gloom and make the most of what you have.

If we compare our selves to 3rd world country's then we are doing fine but for the western way of living people want more than they can afford and spend above their limit, advertising should be put in the same category as smoking and drinking and presented with a health warning.
The Governments in my time have all been Conservatives and Labour and proved themselves to be liars and cheats and only in it for themselves. They say Britain is a Great Country and I was brought up to believe that but now I would not let on I am British because we Brits have not got the balls to complain and that's how they keep us. We should have a president because you can shoot them if you don't like them and with that thought in their mind they do their best for the people,"Don't they"!!!!!!!!

i think this could be considered as corrupting a minor and could produce a diverse perverts and deviants yet Britain has the optimal fee of candy sixteen being pregnant and if its taught in faculties via instructors then it may grow to be much less of a taboo so much less proper to rebellious teen a protracted time you may blame the goverment all day long yet we could take some responsabilty for our very own strikes and whilst there's a difficulty doing no longer something is worse than attempting some ingredient we could all vote bnp and all get advised the thank you to think of

who cares what the Brits think - the issue is what do Americans think - and more so - what are they going to do to make a change?

The reason the general populace is going into debt is because we have swallowed the whole mass media hype to live beyond our means.

No one saves to buy what they need or want - they buy it on more and more credit, which in turn lowers the available dollars they have for real needs, paying off the interest.

Once over their heads, they declare bancruptcy, which costs the companies selling the goods, and inherantly causes the rise in cost of goods to cover the bad sales and money lost.

With worsening credit ratings, people have to pay higher percentages on loans and such, making it harder to get homes and such, which means people are renting more and more. This money doesn't help invest into a home building equity, which helps add to their value. rent money is simply flushed down the toilet.

Add to that the fact that we are gluttons - for oil, food, everything. We moan and groan about the cost of gas, but we won't do what is needed to conserve - to lessen the need - which would force the prices down. Lower fuel prices would mean less cost to produce and ship food items - which would lower the cost of food.

Everything is interconnected - and the answer is within ourselves.

It doesn't help we have a bunch of sycophants in Congress that is selling our sovereignty and trade off to the world in the name of Free Trade. Free trade is never FREE - it always costs US.

We have high federal taxes because Congress has allowed the world to dump their products on us with virtually NO import duties and such. The thing that is supposed to be financing our government, and has gone to charging our own companies for exporting items, or allowed other nations to lay these duties on our companies.

We need to get the stranglehold of the Republican and Democratic parties off of Congress, and bring in fresh Independent blood - with no ties to special interests or the foreign powers playing with us.

We also need to pull out of the UN, The World Bank, GATT, and the WTO, and start forcing individual nations that want to do busines here to deal with us face to face.

Leavng the UN would in itself free up nearly a trillion in US funds, that is what we pay the UN for our share of their operating budget - for programs that are on the most part - Anti-American and socialist in nature.

Time to wake up people.

as to the header of your question...my reply is ..NOT A LOT.....this country is sinking quicker than the titanic...this might be partially due to the amount of illegal immigrants, that's pushing all the boundaries to stay in this country, and taking most of the jobs? they say the employment rate is dropping for u.k citizens, its lower than ever? of course it is...and no disrespect to these people but the polish, cosovans, and god knows who else are sailing through job interviews, and can hardly speak a word of English, taking all the jobs? and don't anyone dare say ,they are doing the jobs we wont do ..cos that's b@llocks? i know of a firm that employs all nationalities and a English woman told me that the bosses took all the Brits to one side and gave them a run-down of what they could and couldn't say...not mention the war,Saddam Hussein, talk about monkeys,Christ its not Britain no-more its a advert for BENETTON,I'm sure we all remember that one?
