Take a look at the msconfig utility and see if there isn't a bunch of software that is loading with Windows and running in the background. Here is the pate to the utility: Click Start/Run, in the run box type "msconfig" without the quotes. This will open the System Configuration Utility, now click the "Startup" tab. Remove the check mark from those programs that you don't want to load with Windows. You should leave your Anti-virus, your Firewall, any Anti-spyware running. Just about everything else can be shut down.
After you have made your choices, click "Apply" and then "Ok". You will now have to do a "restart".
The only other suggestion that I can think of would be to add more RAM. These days you should be running a minimum of 512 megs, but 1 gig would be much better.

First go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. Any software you have not used in over a year that does not run in the background (antivirus, etc.) can be removed.
Second, go to Start>Run and type in "prefetch" (without the quotes). This will open a window with a ton of files that are actually cookies for not only the Internet, but other programs installed on your computer. Click on "Edit", "Select All", then hit your "Delete" key. Click on "Yes." This will not affect any of the programs you use or run in any way. Make sure you empty your Recycle Bin as well.

Go to the website at the below link, and download the free version of "Advanced Windows Care Personal" by clicking on the "Get Freebie" bar on that page. Install the program and run it, and it'll do an excellent job of getting rid of a lot of "stuff" that is slowing your pc down. Hope this helps.

try downloading CCleaner, it'll clean up the registry, and all other unnecessary files on your computer. also go to the Run option in the start menu and type in "msconfig" then go to the Startup tab and uncheck any programs that arent necessary, it'll speed up the bootup process tremendously. if u arent sure which ones to uncheck (some are essential windows components, let these run) then just enter in the file name into google or yahoo and check to see if its needed or not.
