Hmm on my modem i have three lights if only one light is on it means that the broadband isnt working properly . You say that you have installed the modem on your friends laptop but have you tried using the modem at his place to see if it is your line not the modem?ask tiscali to check your phoneline is working properly they can get BT to check your local exchange. If the line is fine make sure all modems are uninstalled and then install your modem drivers (you can get conflicts).Go to internet options and check connection tab to see what modems are installed and which is currently being used and good luck hope this helps.

i have tiscali broadband too and i cant have the house phone plugged in at the same time. try disconnecting the phone. one time when it kept happening tiscali sent me a new modem. tell them that you tried it on another pc and had the same problem. i`ve always found tiscali to be quite helpful.

error 680 is no dial tone you may have a problem with the modem on your mach. Did you use the same cable on the other mach? Try checking control panel to see if it's configured correctly.

I had the same prob. with BT. They connected me to the main junction box where it comes into the house. Explained i lived just a bit too far from the exchange, reduced my speed and now alls OK. Havent had a prob. since they did this 18 mnths ago. If you can move your comp. to near the main box, give it a try
