You have to get to a point where you truly see and realize that every time you give in to the impulse, on the other side you are less of a man. Then you will realize that this addiction has no value in your life. Not some, but no value. At that point the real you will kick in and you can say no every time the addictive nature calls out for you to give it life. It's like getting so sick of something that just the thought of it makes you turn away. have you seen this yet? When you fall prey to addiction, the good effects come first, then the bad. When you head back the other way, the bad effects come first, then the good. Let the addictive nature rise and fall, then move out of a new way. Do this more and more and you will wean yourself away from the addictive impulses. If you fail, don't despair, just pick up where you left off. You have to pay the price now for your selfishness, but you can become free with time if you realize the zero or harmful value the addiction has on you.

It's your enemy now, not your friend. It fooled you, now you have to reclaim your life from it.

The important point is changing behavior, and this change is not easy, it took some time before it settled down in you as behavior. So you have to give it time for the required change.

If you have very strong will power than sudden change is the best answer, but If you are not then the best alternative is "substitution" Find out alternative activity which is less harm full but with full understanding that after this you are going to stop. Repeat this with lesser and lesser magnitudenal things till the intensity of the addiction has changed into a "desire" . That will be the turning point, from that point onward you will be master to decide what to take and what to reject.

what is your addiction?

you have to realize that being addicted to just about anything is harmful i have an alcoholic father and a perscription pill addict brother. But have tried recovery but arnt willing to give it there all. You have to go into the process wanting change, and knowing that it is best for you. You have to give it a sincere effort!

Best of luck, hope this helps!

For self-help groups, it depends on the type of addiciton. Look in the yellow pages, call your local police precinct (NO, they cannot come "get you" for admitting you need help!!!), hospital or public health nurse to locate an A.A./N.A./O.A./whatever group you need. Find out when and where they meet. Then go.

For professional help, many mental health centers can connect you with treatment centers, and there are income-level programs for those who cannot afford it but need to get help to save their lives.

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Addiction is life-threatening, and is an illness, NOT a moral/"willpower" issue. There is hope, you can heal. It just takes willingness to take the first step. Good luck to you!

first off...what type of addiction is it? physical, mental, or?

if it is harming you and you feel like you aren't in control, you need to get professional help. if you are harming others, you need to get that help right away before you do something that will destroy your life.

you recognize your need to stop, so you are halfway there! don't stop now - make the decision to recover!

good luck!

You really need to go to counceling with a 12 step process. You have to make the decision each time you are tempted to do something else. To get to that point, you need counceling, and ESPECIALLY one or more people to whom you can be accountable to everyday. You also need to know that your actions are hurting more than just you. Please get help, you don't want to be miserable anymore, you were meant to have joy and be happy. And whatever your addiction is, it is making you and the ones who love you so deeply hurt. But if you are really willing to overcome this, and get help, you can and will do it!! Pray to have the strength from God. He will ALWAYS be there to listen and to guide you if you stay close to Him.
