If you stay in the resort you won't have a problem. However they are doing much more than just trying to sell you drugs in the local streets, often you are robbed or beaten. Jamaica has become a very dangerous place to visit. Be very careful and stay on the beaten path, so you don't get beaten. Do not go out at night and do not drive in the countryside.
Otherwise have a good time.

It really depends on the hotel where you're staying at and if they have policies stopping vendors. I have been to Negril, Ocho Rios, and of course Montego Bay....all the huge tourist areas I would say. I found that I was harassed the least in Negril, and I even went on three excursions off the property. I was harrassed the most on the way to and in Ocho Rios. My fiance was asked ALL the time if he wanted some "Bob Marley" and whatever other names you want to call it. I'm talking ALL the freaking TIME. It got really annoying!!! The vendors were SO rude as well. I understand they try to get you to buy things, talk, etc as that is their way of life....but there is difference between trying to sell stuff and being on the verge of not letting you physically leave.
The hotels in Negril and Ocho Rios did not allow vendors on their premises or on the beach. However, the hotel in Ocho Rios did not enforce this very well....so maybe that's why I feel Ocho Rios was worse.
Just be careful and use common sense. Do not wander alone by yourself, take excursions approved by your hotel, etc. I have been to Cancun Mexico as well and bartered with vendors in the market there too....I still thought Ocho Rios was worse than there. I still had an awesome vacation though....just be smart about it!!!

We didn't have any problems in the resort. But, as soon as we walked off the plane and was getting ready to leave the airport, that was the first thing they asked my husband. When we stayed in Jamiaca, we really didn't leave our resort too much because we did spend a lot of money for that.

Anywhere you go there are certain less than desirable areas. In Jamaica we have places like Rae Town and in America there are places such as Bed-Stuy. It all depends on where you go. If you stay in the resort all the time trust me you going to miss out on the real Jamaica.Go to Dunn's River Falls or Bowood Beach in Trelawny. Go to Margueritaville and enjoy yourself. The people are friendly and wont run up to you like idiots selling drugs. We have sense. If you dont harass or insult us we wont insult you. Lataz.

I was in Montego Bay with my boyfriend and we did not get offered anything. We did have a bit of a situation there though. He was wearing some New Nike shoes that has not come to Jamaica yet. We got surrounded by people that wanted to buy them and they were very reluctant to let us go. Besides that great palce great people.

It depends on where in Jamaica you go but you will be on the North coast of the island that is tourist area. They won't bother you in Negril to buy drugs, if anything they will try to sell you Jamaican souveniers.

I'll have to disagree with you- not all resorts in Jamaica have 'heavy' security. You could be at the beach in front of your resort- and it could be a public beach. When I was there I was approached buy some guys asking if I wanted to buy and all I was doing was laying out at the beach- yes, in front of my hotel.

YES I went to Ocho Rios in Feb. and the harassment was horrible, we even had people come up to us at the air port asking if we wanted drugs. When you are on the roads everywhere you look you will see Marijuana plants everywhere. It's quite annoying. They are a TON! of dealers on the beach mainly, sher they have beach police but they came right back.
There was a man just SCREAMING out on the beach of our resort "ANYONE WANT SOME WEED" and the police came and told him he had to leave and he did but he came back in 20 min. doing it again. But Jamaica is a wonderful place.
Have fun!
