Looms come in different gauges. The round red Knifty Knitter is appoximately 3/4-inch gauge and has 31 pegs. The stitches will be more loose and "stretchy", allowing you to create a hat that will fit a child for some time.

There are also 1/2-inch gauge looms, with more pegs set more closely together. The stretch of the loom knit item is much less, but the overall look is usually much nicer. The smaller gauge will give you less gaps and spaces, keeping the top of the head warmer.

You can usually find the set of Knifty Knitters at most craft stores that also sell yarn. And as for other looms, if you are interested in purchasing them, can be found online. Some of the brands and sites are:
>>DA Looms -- decoraccentsinc.com (wood w/nylon pegs or steel pins, depending on loom gauge/size)
>>CinDWood Crafts -- cindwoodcrafts.com (wood w/ nylon pegs)
>>In The Attic -- knittinglooms.com (similar to Knifty Knitter, but flexible)
>>Lynn Markman -- markmanfarm.com (handmade, all wood)

And there are more out there....
Hope this helps!

Michaels Craft Store has a set of looms for $19.99 CDN which are similar to the old spool (corking) looms we used as a child. I have used them and they are extremely easy to use. The set has 4 round looms - the smallest for young children, the medium one for older children, the third one for women and teens and the fourth one for men. I would definitely recommend these for their ease and quickness in completing a project.

If you're talking about Knifty Knitter branded ones, the blue one (smallest) is for babies, red one (next smallest) is for children, green one is for average adults (second biggest), and the yellow one is for large adults (biggest). Hope that helps.
