I am in the state of Georgia and I want to divorce my husband. We have been married for 1 year, but have been together for 4 years. We have two children - ages 3 and 1 years of age. I want to know the steps that I have to take to file for a divorce. I am a stay at home mom with a ( soon ) degree in Medical Transcription. I don't have a job and no money ( since my husband packed up his stuff and left) to pay for a lawyer to help with consoltation. What are the steps that I need to take? Are there lawyers out there that can help me with my situation? If there is anybody out there would be so kind to help me and answer some of my questions it would be greatly apperciated!!

First and foremost get a lawyer. You can sort out the money issues along the way. Divorce is an emotional roller coaster and you need to take care of yourself first because you cannot take care of the kids if you don't. Finish your school and get a job. And the very best advice I got when going through a divorce was "make sure you eat right". It sounds dumb, but makes all the difference.

Depending on what county you live in really... I lived in Heard County, GA and my ex lived in Stephens County, GA when we were divorced. My ex agreed to divorce me with me being the primary caretaker. I chose not to put child support in the divorce papers but the judge changed that while we were standing in front of him. I paid $90 and filed the papers myself. A lawyer is at the lowest $250 in Georgia for uncontested divorce. A lawyer most likely will not take on your case without $200-$500 down. Not many will do pro bono divorces. Your best bet would be to go through divorces at the courthouse (public record) and try to type up your own papers. That is what I did. It's much cheaper. I hope this helps... if you have any other questions, feel free to ad me to your contacts and msg me. Good luck.

I would suggest that you have a free consultation with a local lawyer in your area, ask them what they think you should do they may be able to help in finding a cheaper or even a probono- non profit lawyer but I would suggest start with the consultation first. Here is a link for a local lawyer in your area, fill the form out and good luck!

Most lawyers will give you a free first consultaion.

What you should do is go to the domestic relations office and file for child support and worry about the divorce once you get on your feet.

Contact your women's resource center. Most of them have legal aid help available. Do not try a divorce on your own; get it right so you get child support.
