you know i'm not a mccain fan, as of yesterday i didn't think he stood a chance against giuliani, but he did great last night, i stereotyped him as this blah boring guy, but he really nailed the questions last night, i think giuliani did best next to him

It wasn't a obvious winner as it was in the Dem debate.

I would have to say three candidates did especially well.
Huckabee, Tancredo, and Paul. I think Huckabee probably gained some votes last night though so I'd give the "official" win to him.

I do not think McCain won any votes over last night, in fact I am sure he has lost some...but he did a good enough job to keep himself in the race (which was quite a feat in itself). I do not support McCain, nor will I.

Paul, while perhaps not gaining any new converts last night, is getting a message out that takes awhile to take root with people. He has to keep hammering away for his message to have any chance to win, and he is doing that.

Romney had a good start...but he really did poorly in the second half of the debate so I would have to say he lost. (He needs to keeping moving forward and he did not do that last night). His answer to all the worlds problems seemed to be....we can sell them something...last night, and that was a tad silly. He should have been hammering hard on immigration at every opportunity given him. He blew it.

Brownback and Tommy Thompson were the biggest losers though...they are going nowhere and need to go home. They are simply taking up room in the debate and have nothing to offer.

To all those Ron Paul fans...he just didn't cut it last night. I thought he did great in the last debate, but came across as extreme and out there last night. Of course, you're all going to say he won anyway.

Of the top 3, I think McCain probably won, although I can't really stand the guy, but he did respond strong and with emotion (somewhat - he still looks like a robot).

I think the second tier also did good this time. It's just unfortunate there are so many candidates and so little time. I would be nice if they could narrow it down to a handful, but I guess that's not how it works.

It does really matter who won the debate

My assessments:
McCain held own but due to death of Falwell he will not get Falwell's supporters. I feel sorry for the time and effort McCain put into trying to court him.

Giuliani: Doesn't he know when to just shut up!

Romney: I heard that beginning questions stumped him.

Other candidates have no chance whatso ever.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Fred Thompson gets into the fray.

I guess Tommy Thompson made the comment he did because nobody knows who is is anyway.
It is a shame that Giuliani is ahead in some polls but yet will not get the nomination and the man that has raised the most money places 4th in polls when you add in Fred T.

The democrats are smart they are only fielding eight candidates while the republicans are fielding 10. That might explain why the Democrats have outpaced Republicans in fund raising.

I feel much sorrow for the GOP that Bush had to pick Cheney as his V-P instead of someone that would be capable of succeeding him

The say Romney did. Cris Christie is endorsing him. besides the undeniable fact that, Mitt will under no circumstances ascend to the presidency. He purely does not have sufficient hatred and tea in him. He turn flops on each subject and if he went up against President Obama in a debate he could look ridiculous.

It won't be long before this group launches George W's dinghy. They mentioned Democrats quite often and that wasn't surprising. Next month Fred Thompson will be in the debate in Carolina, and if that doesn't work, by Labor Day Newt will declare his candidacy. That shows proof that this Grand Old Party is divided. In Last nights debate, I thought it was Mccain who came across as sincere and realistic about difficult issues such as immigration. Simplistic remedies will not prevail here and I though he made himself perfectly clear. Rudi was already debating Democrats and Romney thinks the free market system is going to cure all the nations ills. Winner: Mccain.

Mitt Romney started out well, but then start using evasive political platitudes/rhetoric.

Rudy Guiliani seemed rattled esp after McCain stood to answer the female audience member (more on that later). Rudy's actions and non-verbal expressions seemed parroted and reflected irritation; not presidential or confidence in his leadership abilities. Now, as a female Christian & Republican I agree w/ his stance on abortion and believe it should be on the Republican's platform --- hey, God advocates Pro-Choice (Freewill) & Pro-Life...both are mediated by the concept of personal responsibility.

In my opinion, McCain expressed himself very well, seemed presidential, and displayed leadership that seemed to 'rattle' the rest of the candidates (many of them follow his lead and stood up/walk to address the audience) I laughed...because I remember doing similar thing in college when I'd to speak before a class....element of surprise, sets you apart from others who have spoken beforehand...classic move to engage audience!

Yes, I agree it's sad that the "top-tier" candidates seemed to have rec'd prefential treatment regarding time contraints/comments.

Last, Paul seem to be spoiler.

I'm not a McCain supporter, but his answer to the girl about Iraq last night was brilliant. He won the debate, but still won't win the nomination.

I think Hunter, Paul, Huckabee, and Tancredo, as a group, won. They showed that the 2nd tier has much more meaningful to say than the showhorses who now comprise the 1st tier candidates.

Without a doubt, Rudy Giuliani lost. The whole idea of lightening striking his mike when he tried to explain his position on abortion was just too eery. But what really got me was when he tried to explain that commiting our nation to a permanent plan of "nation-building" by the military around the world. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Has he never read or heard anything about foreign policy in his life? I'm really beginning to believe that Ron Paul was right to take him on about foreign policy, because Giuliani seems to be an utter imbecile on dealing with war and foreign relations. After last night, I'm starting to think that he'd be more dangerous than the Democrats.

Nit Romney

However Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich have not announced yet. None of the current crop are going to get the nomination
