It could be light pollution from a local town or city if you live near one, or it could be the northern lights if you don't. The northern lights don't always dance around- sometimes they just look like a reddish patch in the sky.

If you live in or near an urban area, you are seeing the glow of the city lights. If you live in an isolated rural area, I have no idea.
