Used to be dogs weren't pets, they were working animals, like horses and oxen. They were used for herding, hunting, guarding, and to pull sleds. They worked 24 hours a day, and were only paid in food.

probably refering to actual working dogs, as in sheep dogs and dogs who round up cattle, seeing eye dogs etc
