ClamAV now has a Win installer, google ClamAV for windows, or F-Prot use to have a great one. ClamAV is Linux stuff, it works as good if not better than most cause it doesnt take up alotta system resources.
Best defense is a good backup routine, well it isnt a offense defense thing, OSs crash, Digital Data can get corrupted, but a backup routine works.
Look up :-) , it is from a backup tape of a Message Board in 1985 or so.

Type the words "free anti-virus" into a search engine without the quotes and you can take your pick.

Zone Alarm has some pretty good products if you're not running Norton. Symantec and Zone Alarm do not play nice.

avg anti-virus and avast

use them both, avast as the back up.

also try anti-spyware if you hadn't already.
free ones:
ad-aware
windows defender
spyware terminator (with real time shield)
also use spyware blaster to keep spyware from getting into your system

use a free firewall
zonealarm firewall or comodo firewall

use ccleaner to clean out and erase the history of your pc, advanced windows care v2 could also do that trick.

Avast Home Antivirus (Vista Compatible)

AntiVir PE (Vista Compatible)

( Note: Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective.
