The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite and it's a little old.Awhile ago the screen wasn't bending in every position and now it either has to be shut or all the way bent back because that's the only way I can use it.Or I have to hold it with my left hand and type with my right hand...that's inconvenient.

I've seen this before with Toshiba satellites... the hinges either break or the bits of the case they screw into disintegrate... and it's not only Toshiba this happens to.

There's probably no economic way to fix this. You'd need to get a new shell or new hinges (or both) from Toshiba and the laptop is probably worth less than they'd ask for the bits.

Hi. Try a velcro strap and a couple of velcro pads on the side. Put the screen where you want it an attach the strap. Not elegant but if the strap is black you'll hardly notice it.
