Not free, contested elections. In The People's Republic they have elections with one party. There is only one candidate for office and you can only vote yes or no. It only takes more yes votes than no votes to win. Very few people vote no as that can get you in trouble with the government. The Chinese on the island of Taiwan have free elections, but are not recognized as an independent government by many other countries.
