D-Day was the retreat of the UK Army from France in the face of the Nazi conquest of France. It is celebrated in the UK, not because of the defeat to Nazi Germany, but becasue of the escape of tens of thousands of british troops. It took a fleet of ordinary people (fishermen, amatuer sailors) to sail across the English channel numerous times under heavy bombardment to help them escape. It could have been a massacre, instead it was a little miracle which enabled a fight back and the end of Nazisim

James M - that was a great description of Dunkirk! D-Day was the invasion of Nazi occupied France by the allied forces. The normandy coastline was broken down into codenamed sections, namely Utah (US), Omaha (US), Gold (UK), Juno (Canada), Sword (UK).
