It's hard to answer when you're not a Treker...
I really tried to like star trek, I have even watched a few episodes of Enterprise... but It didn't atract me... Instead I love Star Wars, Lord of The rings and many other movie series...
Well, relating to your question, NO I can't belive they are more passionate than other people, but they're probably very afictionate and also misunderstood people...
Try to see this fans as ordinary people.
If you wacth LOST and you don't have anything else to do at the same time, how long will you take to be called an afictionated on It?! And for sure, You'll start watching it every day, almost religiously... so, to make it clear, I say: No, They just love a Tv show, nothing else, but the power of this idea, the fact that the star Trek fans are extremely passionate, makes everyone think all the fans are freaks... Even when they are NOT!

first off it isn't fair to put us all in one group. There are 2 groups(well major groups) There is the newer Trekkers, who take them selves way to serious, and the trekkies, like me who take it light hearted. it is show based on the betterment of people, and also inspired many things in life, and what will come to life in the near furture.
Best example, if you own a flip top phone? think of the Star Trek:TOS and how they talk to each other.

judging by the sub-par last movie turnout i think the passion is dying -it was an ok movie but not great at all-hopefully the relaunch next year will "light the fire"
i cant wait to see the new movie in 2008

The thing about trekkers, is that its ok to like the movies, but once you move out of your parents basement, you'll soon discover that there is more to life.
