BASIC is an acronym, it stands for "Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code."

It was popular because it used English words (for the most part) to describe computer functions. You used words like "INPUT" and "PRINT" instead of words like "GREP" that no one understood.

It was also widely popular because it was the language made available with the APPLE II and the TRS-80, two of the first widely-available consumer computers in the late 70's and early 80's.

Today, Microsoft has taken BASIC to the next level, and a widely-used programming language today is Visual BASIC.NET, an extended language that takes advantage of Microsoft's .NET platform and allows anyone with a working knowledge of BASIC to write powerful computer programs in a very short amount of time.

Original BASIC is still alive and well. There is a version of it for the PC called "POWERBasic", which is still distributed and is in wide usage today.

Beginners All-purpose System Instruction Code -- it is one of the earliest programming languages and at one point came in several different types. BASIC was originally intended to be a simplified code for anyone to use and was, in fact, the pre-cursor to most of the operating systems out today (in the 1970s, the Apple IIe computers used Apple Basic, which is what we first learned to use in schools.)
