i even want to know how to protect it

once there were three thick friends namely tomato, chilli and our superstar onion. they spent all the day with eachother. once wen they were playing police n theif in midst of the road, tomato was smashed to death by a lorry. onion and chilli shared the grief of losing their friend n cried so badly. then as time went onion and chilli had their life rolling. then there was a big fight in the city, in this attack chilli lost its life as it was cut into pieces.then onion cried badly for the distress of losing its another friend also. now it got a feel of loneliness. so it started doing penance and met the god. wen god asked him wat he wanted, he putforth the grief that there was no one on this earth for him to hardly even cry wen he is dead. so god blessed that if he is killed by someone they will have tears in their eyes.so from that day who ever cuts onion cry for its demise

Onions are rich in sulfur compounds, some of which are released into the air when you cut them open. These irritate the eyes ans can make them water. It's not exactly "crying".
You can avoid this problem if you cut them under a layer of water in your sink.

We cry because when we cut the onion, the blade destroys the cells in the onion. In these cells are enzymes and these enzymes react with other gases to form a gas that makes you cry on contact with your eyes.

We cry when we cut onions because of these ungrateful people that we cook these food for who does not even say thank you or compliment our cooking or wash the dishes after meal.

Allyl alcohol vapor from the cut onion (genus Allium) affects our lacrimal glands located in our eyes at the tear ducts causing us to cry. Allyl alcohol is an alkene CH2=CH-CH-OH.
Please note: It contains no sulfur.
