the item is looking really dull and has a white tarnish to it, ive tried with vinegar and salt (sumone told me to try it)and it looked good until it dried ! and now looks the same as before

When I was a little girl my girl scout troop cleaned old pennies as an activity. We used a mixture of epsom salt and water in a bowl and just soaked them. They shined up really nicely.

instead of the vinegar use lemons with salt and some elbow grease

Try lemon/lemon juice and salt. It has worked everytime for me.

Tar-nex cleaner, found at your local hardware store. I swear by this product for siver, copper and brass. You just dip it and rinse (or wipe on a rinse) no scrubbing needed and wow! What a shine! ;)

scrouring powder like AJAX. It takes a bit of elbow grease. My mom used to put me on this chore to keep me busy as a kid.

-Hated it.
