I'm thinking about getting a waiting job for the first time this summer. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good resources for learning how, besides on the job experience. A website or book perhaps?

I have worked in many restaurants as a server.
and although books can tell you alot, there is no other training but on the job experience.
start off in a small place. most of the big chains won't hire unless you have experience.

a few key tips for you,
*always smile
*always be polite
*keep the glasses full
*observe the table.... are they eating, does it appear that there may be something wrong?
fix any problem QUICKLY
*bring crackers for the kids. (I usually carry stickers in my order book that kids can have) they're cheap enough I supply them myself.
*be completely honest,
if someone asks you about how good something is, BE HONEST... don't tell them its the best thing you have ever had if you actually hate it.
*Don't ever expect a gratuity, even though that is how you get paid. work for it, give super service and it will happen!

Look for a new restaurant that is opening in your area, usually they will hire in-experienced servers because they have a full on training period. ( where you train and learn for like 2 weeks before they open) and its the best training you will ever get.

GOOD LUCK!

I used to wait tables there is really no books or anything what i did is always think of how i would like to be waited on when i was in a restaurant. The best you can do is just try your best and you will do a great job. just be friendly and not matter how your day is going always smile.

Waiting tables is about being yourself and knowing when the guest needs you. It will take a few weeks to get the idea of how to serve. I suggest observing other servers at different restaurants and pay close attention to the Guest reactions. Words mean one thing, but reactions mean another. If you are a people person, you will be fine.

It's on the job training for most waiting job. Have no fear.
Basic rules: customers' first, serve with a smile and make
small conversations when there a need.

If you're worried about it, maybe start as a host. That way you can watch servers interact with customers and how they deal with serving food. Plus it'll help you get to know the restaurant, the menu, the "type" of people that eat there and start to give you customer service skills.

Good luck!

I learned from working with my cousin doing catering. Smile, be friendly and helpful. Learn the restaurant's system and their menu so you can advise. Like if someone wants a wine and you have no clue, don't say "I dunno", you act chipper and say "We have an excellent bartender who can recommend one, I'll get them for you!" And keep everything clean. If you have time to be leaning, you should be cleaning.
And make sure glasses and cups are never empty.

Good luck, it can be a fun job!

Always remember even if your in the worst of moods, that the customer chose YOUR RESTAURANT to eat at. So just try and make it a wonderful experience for them. (You'd want someone to do the same for you!) Plus the compliments you sometimes get will just make your day!
