I worked at McD's in the mid 90's and I recall seeing the franchise's cost sheets, though regular crew members weren't supposed to see them. They make the most from fries and drinks, and the least from the salads and sandwiches. For example, their cost for a quarter pounder was $.62 and it sold for $2; A large french fry cost $.23 and it sold for $1.39; A large iced tea (including the cup, lid and straw) was $.07 and it sold for $1.29. It doesn't take a genius to figure out why they ask you if you want a drink. Keep in mind this data is about 12 years old, but I imagine the margins today are about the same.

hy, i used to be a manager at a mcdonalds and 4yrs ago the cost for making a 'big mac' was 18p, the sale value was then £1.88p. but really the most profit made from such places is in the sale of soft drinks ie, reg coke cola costs around just 8p to make and has a resale value of 89p. thats profit, over 100%.

To make a Burger it costs them less then 30p. The sell to you for £2-4.
That's why they are making huge amounts of profits. Take a guess on how much it costs to make their fizzy drinks, 10P

Fast food typically makes its money on drinks and fries. That's where the huge margins are at.
A friend of mine used to be an area manager for a fast food chain. They broke even on sandwiches, lost money on salads, and made the majority of money on drinks and fries.

Usually around 60% mark-up for the food. They have to take out labor and building costs from that though.

It will cost them a lot to start a new burger because they have to make loads it has to go through health and safety and so on but if everyone likes it you could make +400%. for example KFC's Zinger look how popular that is.
