go to http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3186_7-0.html?filter=503164_11795436_&tag=dir,and read the cnet reveiws of external hard drives, theres over 800 reveiws by manufacturers and cnet registered users, your sure to get some ideas from the external drives there
also try External Hard Drives Reviews(http://www.consumersearch.com/www/computers/external-hard-drives/index.html),this is a dedicated site reveiwing all kinds of p.c components
my personal recommendation in external hard drives goes to Freecom(http://www.freecom.com/product.asp?CatID=8020),these drives are quite inexpensive and very reliable,i have used a 80gb classic model for the last 2 years and find it excellent for storage and back up purposes, freecom also do a large selection of 2.5" drives and external optical drives
i hope this helps
good luck mate!

try ebuyer.co.uk. It's a commercial site (cheap!) but the customer reviews are usually pretty trustworthy and knowledgeable.

Even newEgg.com which is an online retailer provide some fair reviews from users of products.

PCmag.com can also hook you up with reviews.
