The myceneans were warlike people who lived in Greece, possibly from around 1900 BC.By 1600BC they were trading in the Aegean, and after the fall of Crete they became the major power in the region. The Mycenae rulers lived in hilltop citadels overlooking cities protected by thick stone wall

The city of Mycenae was at the heart of their civilization.People entered my cenae through the lion gate,a great stone gateway from which a path led straight to the royal palace.Graves of the ruling family, filled with treasure and personal possession for the afterlife were found near the gate in AD 1876

Weakened by interstate warfare, the Mycenae cities were destroyed and lost.During an excavation of the grave at Mycenae in the late 1800s,the so-called 'mask of Agamemnon' was uncovered. It is unclear of the origin of this mask because so much of the cities and their stories were destroyed, but believe it is to be the mask of an early king

First, most archeologists don't believe it was the actual mask of Agamemnon--they think it dates to a different era. But when it was first discovered, it was hailed as Agamemnon's mask, so they still refer to it like that. The problem is, most artifacts don't have a written history attached to them, so we don't know exactly where they came from. We can only make educated guesses, based on where it was found and any dates we can assign to it, based on its design and what other artifacts accompanied it.
