Which one is best to use on a LAN and why?

Of the two, the bridge. A hub is a simple device that receives input and forwards out all other ports. A bridge learns the addresses of other devices connected to each of its ports and makes decisions about whether or not to forward a packet based on the addressing. This splits up the collision domain of the ethernet network.

The modern implementation of a bridge is a switch. The switch behaves as though there was an array of bridges connecting any two arbitrary ports on the device. Each port, then, is separated into its own collision domain. A side effect of this is that total network throughput is multiplied.

Hubs and bridges serve totally different purposes so they are not comparable
A hub or switch connects a group of computers together within an area
a bridge links areas together

Did you mean which is best hub or switch as these have similar functions
A switch is better than a hub as it reduces the number of data collisions and will allow different speed devices to coexist on the same network.
Example ten PCs running at 100Mbps and one server at 1000Mbps with a hub the server would only be running at 100Mbps with a switch the server could run at full speed
Hub
PC1 sends 1 sec of data
PC 2 has to wait till PC1 has finished
Total time 2 add replies from server time doubles to 4

Switch
PC1 sends 1 sec of data switch forwards it at end of 1 second
PC2 sends 1 sec of data switch queues and forwards it at 1 and a tenth seconds
Total time 1 and two tenth add replies time goes to 1 and 4 tenths

If ten PCs send then with hub takes 10 time units with switch will be 2 units

There is no more bridges, and even hub are vanished from marked only switches are available and that the best device to use on LAN because it use intelligent system to work more better then hub and bridges. Just for discussion hub is better then bridge comparatively

Bridges & Hubs are totally different devices.

Hubs are used to connect a number of machines on the same physical network.

Bridges are used to connect physical networks together ( dumb routers effectively ).

If you meant a 'hub or a switch' - switches are the unit of choice as a switch is able to learn the IP address of a machine plugged into a port & when a broadcast is sent from one machine, it is only sent through ports with machines of the same subnet connected.

If all machines are in the same IP subnet, the choice is - "whichever you have to hand"

For most home networks, either will do.

In a corporate environment where virtual local area networks are used ( Vlans ) - switches are essential & routers are used instead of bridges to allow the vlan structure.

The best you can use for LAN communications is a switch, as it is faster and doesn't broadcast the frames (a hub does so). A bridge, what for? It's better use that for interconnecting two LANs that use different protocols (ex. Token ring/ Ethernet).

A switch or router, all data is sent to one computer, with few collisions

A bridge connects two routers on a network.

A hub is dumb so all data is sent to all computers and data collisions are frequent.

i think not a hub or bridge but switch!! cuz it allocate the band with according to clients request, so that we get full performance coming from network!!
