I hope you consider Steven Spielberg in the modern time frame, because he's by far the best director of the past 30-40 years. Others of note are Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Bryan Singer and Ridley Scott.

Best modern director? Someone whose work is influential, mainstream and commercially and critically worthy? Tough choice, but I'd narrow it down to the youthful hot-shot BRYAN SINGER (Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, X-men, Superman Returns etc.)

I think Scorcese and then Spielberg. The latter has a habit of making some bloated, overdone films like War of the Worlds. Don't get me wrong, I love his films, but there have been some dogs. I think Scorcese has had fewer disappointments.

I would have to say it is Spielberg. That guy just keeps those good movies a-comin! Other than that, Peter Jackson a cool guy.

For me its between Baz Luhrmann and Pedro Almodovar - both awesome with astounding depth to their films.
