i m having a toshiba laptop.its a 1997 model with 4 gb hard ,2 pentium and 128 ram.yesterday i did defregmentation of my drive.then after 5 minute there was only the desktop background and no startmenu n no icons...then i restarted my computer....it was taking alot of time to initialize.......then there was a cheaking of hard disk...."the computer was replacing cluster file"...
today morning when i i was reinstalling xp......it was stop after 57 %....then i did it again......n same thing happened again...
but in evening when i enter xp cd......there was an error........
plzzzzzz help me.....

It sounds like your disk drive has gone wrong.

Defrag pushes the disk drive hard and it may have been the last thing that the drive could cope with. I suggest you try to find a new disk drive... you may have to go second hand to get one that the BIOS can cope with in a 10 year old laptop.

It could be a hard disk drive error. Check the SMART status of the drive in the BIOS or by using a Linux Live CD.

PII CPU with 128mb RAM and a 4Gb HDD is barely capable of running XP. Perhaps consider reverting to Win98 until you can get a higher spec machine.

Also, sounds like your HDD is getting ready to fail.
