go to control panel click on system then device manager then
the hardware tab scroll down to modem and delete modem
reboot your computer which should now detect the modem if you have a driver disc insert when prompted

Well first of all, are you running Win XP/Vista/etc.?

Windows Vista should automatically detect and install whatever you plug into your computer.

With windows XP, the solution is pretty simple. Look at the manufacturer for your modem and go to their website. They should have a driver download section where you select your product and install. This should clear up everything.

Its not a winmodem by chance is it? They are not a true modem, they are a serial communication device and have to use driver software to function in a computer.
