I'd have to say George Washington.

He could have easily became the first King of America if he wanted to.

But he decided to let the experiment in Democracy take hold.

#2 would be Roosevelt, he lead the US through one of its toughest times.

#3 would be Ronald Reagan( thats my choice )

Whether you agreed with his politics or not, Reagan rebuilt the American Dream, he brought America out of the funk that Vietnam had caused. He rekindled the American can do spirit.

#4 Martin Luthur King - He was responsible for politically liberating millions of Americans and ending an oppressive system of abuse and discrinination.

#5 Lincoln - He brought America through it greatest crisis.

#6 JFK - Like Reagan did 20 years later, JFK showed us, not what we are, but what we could become. He demanded greatness from America.

Hard to say ! There have been and are many great Americans, from all sides of politics ,race, religion,culture..
All have contributed to American society in a different way
but done so to benefit every American and some times the world for good..As JFK said "ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.." this is unique in world society thinking and what makes Americans
different !

As of Tuesday, June 05, 2007, 5:31:26 AM, there is none that I would refer to as being great let alone calling any one (sic) ‘the greatest’ and there probably never will be.
However, my father, may he rest in peace; when he was alive, many times would say; “I am a master man”; “I am one of the greatest”.
He was an American born and raised.

edit: He would also say, 'we built this country'.
He never told me who 'we' is/was.

I would have to say Abraham Lincoln he helped in the process of abolishing slavery while dealing with a nation at civil war and seeing it through such a terrible time.

Crazy Horse. This man was a hero who selflessly defended his people from the campaign of genocide being waged against them by the US government. He will be remembered as a man fighting against evil oppression against overwhelming odds
