It takes my time, but made my horizon wider.
I have no kids, but some cartoons caused nightmares to my niece.
People should be selective what they watch and many more times selective what will they allowed kids to watch.
Cheers!

Hey, those are not easy questions. Sounds like you're gathering data for a thesis. Anyway, I don't know that I'm really influenced by TV. Sure the commercials influence what I might purchase, but as far as the story lines in television shows, it doesn't really influence me. The news on the other hand, might influence me. For example, during election time, I might watch a debate between candidates to help me determine who I'm voting for.
I think children are heavily influenced by TV. If they see it on TV, they want it. For example, if they see a fast food commercial that may be endorsing a movie for example, they might tell their parents that they want to eat there just so they can get the toy from the restaurant. Also, children sometimes copy what they see on TV. For example, the media sometimes glamorizes violence and because children are easily influenced, they may start to copy an act of violence they see on TV or during a movie.
Thanks for the interesting question!

Unfortunately our entire culture is tv driven in my opinion. TV has replaced parenting and we are finding out the consequences every day. Children that have never been taught society's rules by example learn what they think is acceptable behavior from tv. When no one explains to girls that the way "The Simple Life" girls act is improper, they see someone young and popular and mold their own behavior after what they witness. Paris wears a mini skirt and little Susie wants one too. Nicole wears makeup, smokes and uses foul language and suddenly the rules that Susie learned or didn't come into question. If they are young and cool and participate in these behaviors, than if Susie did the same she should have the same outcome. Monkey see, monkey do. It's a childs form of logic, obviously. (I only chose that show because it was the first that came to mind- these problem-causing shows are innumerous.) And while some programs could be considered troublesome, I think the most dispicable is the advertising. How many children NEED Trix brand cereal? None of them. How many of them want it? All of them after seeing the "silly wabbit". No child would NEED certain brands of anything unless they were portrayed in a positive light to them. It is sickening to see toddlers "plugged-in". We are killing our kids minds and their ability to think for themselves.

Does life imitate art or does art imitate life? I think it is a little of both. I wouldn't say I feel influenced by t.v., but it is easy to think that what you see on t.v. is all "reality" and that today's American society is spoiled, lazy, undereducated, and indulgent. As an adult with a broader world perspective, I know that is not true, but it is not so for the average 8-17yr old. There needs to be more positive educational family programming. Sadly, as a reflection of our society, that kind of programming is not what gets ratings.

About the only thing I can think of is that I find people more stupid the more I watch television. Luckily, I don't watch muc, or I'd find it impossible to be around others. It's a stretch some days, as it is.
That anyone would want someone like Paris Hilton as a role model, for example, astounds me. This is a painfully thin (if not ill), not especially atttractive, untalented child..and she's 26. Someone would aspire to THAT makes me wonder just how stupid people are. She is just the most recent one.

Well I know it influences how much money I can keep in my purse. That's because I have to buy everything my kids see on TV. Also, my 12 YO I have to buy gaming systems. So it influences my finances.

Influence? I just watch it as an easy sorce of entertainment. I am not going to become a FBI agent and search for the paranomal, or either am I going to stock up on morphine and start endlessly shooting myself. It is just nice to have a break from reality for a moment and to kick back and relax, while partaking in some inbetween zzzz's as well :) ;)

tv actually gives information which you use in your everyday life. if those info are not true, your opinion of the world is twisted too. also children always copy adults, and especially what they see on tv because they don't know what's true or a lie, good or bad. does that make any sense? :S

I would say commercials about food constantly remind me of how good this or that food is, and I'm really getting heavy, so I guess it does influence my life in some way!

I think tv really has a big influence on people. Like my nephew, he watches Mr. Bean, and now he dances like Mr. Bean. He's so cute.
