I have a friend who insists that only fools and horses is the best comedy ( British or otherwise) ever, and that most people would agree with him. I argued that Fawlty Towers is the best. I would like to know what others think so that I can prove to him one way or the other. In my opinion Only fools was good for a few seasons , but became boring in the longer episodes later. Fawlty Towers was consistently hilarious. Other shorter series' that were also better than only fools in my opinion are Alan Partridge and The Office

Fawlty Towers was the best comedy ever written and a shame it only lasted one series. Only Fools runs a close second, helped along by it's longevity.

I would agree that Fawlty Towers is the best British comedy ever, while I love Alan Partridge and The Office, and even the Day Today and Brass Eye. I think Only Fools is better than those. The best British comedy today is Peep Show, it is just a bit better than Green Wing

Only Fools and Horses is The best out of the two in my opinion. I love it so much. Now I'm not saying that Fawlty Towers is not good, because I like it too, but I prefer Only Fools and Horses. The other comedy I like as much as Only Fools and Horses is Some mothers do 've them with Michael Crawford, he's so funny.

Tough question! I was a great fan of both of these comedies but probably Fawlty Towers wins.
Apparently, though, only 12 episodes were ever made.
So maybe if it ran for as long as Only Fools and Horses did, we might have got bored of it as well.

Fawlty Towers. Pure, undiluted, anarchic genius.
Only Fools and Horses. Not bad, but not quite as continuously funny, and it ended up doing a Dallas... running on for years after the writers started to struggle for ideas.
I'm only surprised that someone in the world rates it below the cringeworthty Office.

Fawlty Towers is sooo much better (in my opinion). It did infact run for two series ( total of 12 episodes). I just don't find Only Fools funny. Other great british comedies I love include Nighty Night, Peep Show and Gimme Gimme Gimme although these are all a lot more modern !

Fawlty Towers is John Cleese at his peak, and comedy doesn't come any better than that.
Other cracking series that nobody's mentioned yet: the Royle Family, League of Gentlemen, the Young Ones and some of the Blackadders

fawlty towers wins by far. Only fools is funny, but it only goes so far. Fawlty on the other hand is sharp, racist, stressed, and a bad husband which mixed together produces a hell of a fun time. i only wish they had made more than 2 series.

Of the two I prefer Fawlty towers, but generally women prefer fools and horses, with its more varied cast and interpersonal relationships. Fawlty towers is more about one man's obseccive behaviour and his descent into madness.
