It's a weak card. You don't need a new power supply, a stock Dell 300watt will be fine.

The 7600GT is pretty much the same card without DX10 support and can be purchased for $90.

The weakest for DX10 worth buying is the 8600GTS, but even then the 8800GTS 320mb isn't that much more, yet blows it away.

But yeah, I would've went for the 1950pro, which is still the best for the money at $125'ish. But you would have needed a new power supply.

It says 2048x1536 because that's what the 8600GT can output to a monitor if the monitor can support it.

First off, Supreme Commander is a pretty demanding game by any standards, and all but high end cards need to turn down some settings on it.

Second of all, if your LCD monitor is a 19" VGA port instead of DVI, (which mine is as well), then your monitor is limiting your resolution, not the card. You could likely stick a 8800 GTX in there and still only get a 1280x1024 res. Finally, I wouldn't really put up a budget card to those resolutions anyway, because its very taxing on the system.

Thirdly, you have a single core P4 chip which have become really outdated since the new Core 2 Duo's. Over all your system is low end and the problem is not just the card.

Finally, the 8600 GT IS a very good overclocker, and you should be able to do quite well with it. Since it IS an nVidia card, I wouldn't advise using ATitools at all, but download Coolbits instead. Then you can select the "optimize performance" button so it'll automatically overclock the card to the maximum safe level.

Its clearly not the best card in the world, but it is not at all bad at its price point.

It is one of the cheap DX10 cards, good value for money actually, so I would not expect near-8800GTS performance. Benchmarks from some reviews indicate its performance at between 7600GT and 7900GS. But then, the 8600GT has great overclocking headroom. Check out this link:
