Recently, none. Even in the past, the republics formed were not very democratic in nature. Costa Rica and Chile have the longest and best records. Even though Pinochet became corrupted and held onto power, he did save Chile from a Soviet sponsored dictatorship. Many seem to be back sliding into pure dictatorship like Venezuela and Nicaragua. Mexico made progress in the not too far past but seems to be once again sliding into one-party rule. Brazil may actually be the best hope. Even after Castro dies, the Communists are so entrenched in Cuba that the people will most likely continue to live at a lower level of poverty then need be. Liberal (not the modern definition) republicanism seems to be dying worldwide in my opinion.

You did mean region, not religion, right?

Well actually, besides Cuba, every nation in Central and South America has a Democratic Government with an elected leader.

Only Cuba has a dictator.
