My 4 month old sometimes gets frustrated with the slow nipple, and at other times he's perfectly fine with it. So that leaves me very confused ..

I have the Playtex Ventaire Stage 1. My son is also 4 months old. I used a needle and poked an extra hole (small pin hole). It gives him a lil extra, yet the hole isn't so big that it increases the speed of the flow.

Well I dont know if this helps any but I use the Avent bottles and when you go to buy the nipples in the store the stage 2 nipples are the begining nipples and it tells you on the side of the container. If you look at the container for the size 3 nipples it says to start them at 3 months and so on. Like I said I dont know what nipples your using so dont know if this will help but look at the packaging it may tell you at what age they can use the next stage of nipples.

when our boys got frustrated with the slow nipple, we would go ahead and try the next size. we could tell if it was too fast if the milk came dribbling out the side of their cheek. if that was the case, we'd switch back to the slower one and try again next time they seemed frustrated. but we also used avent nipples, which gave age guides on the packaging. even if you don't use avent, maybe take a look and see what their typical age ranges are, and use it to help you see.

Well, try putting some Stage 2 nipples on a few bottles and see if that helps.

Try the next stage nipple. If he seems aggitated or gassy after a few days with that, then it's too soon and you'll want to put him back on the smaller one. :)
