120.5cm. If 17% is taken away, you're left with 83%. So 100cm is 83% of what?
0.83*x=100cm, or
x=(100/0.83)cm =120cm

Let x = the length of clay before firing
17% = .17

x - .17x = 100
.83x = 100
x = 100/.83
x = 120.48 cm ==> you need this length to get 100 cm of ceramic piece
______________________
to check
17% of 120.48 = 20.48 cm ==> amount of shrinkage
120.48 - 20.48 = 100 cm
