Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing

You can design something on a computer, pass that info to a machine (usually metalworking machine) and it will make it for you.

CAD stands for Computer Aided Design and CAM stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing. CAD-CAM is used to automate the CNC programming process where a CAD file is converted into machine toolpath. This process involves roughing where the largest amount of material is removed and then Finishing toolpath where the remainder of the material is removed to provide a finished surface or contour. The CAD-CAM software will produce an NC (numeric Code) file that is then sent to the CNC machines controller. Prior to the NC or G-Code file being sent to the machine, often times Simulation takes place where the machinist can evaluate the toolpath to ensure there are no tool gouges or collisions that will cause the material to be scrapped. CAD-CAM technology saves time through machine toolpath and programming automation and can sometimes pay for the cost of the product in the first job. It increases productivity through streamlining the CAD-CAM part programming process.

ok CAD is the software on your Pc you use to do drawings. example is AutoCad which is used for mechanical and artitechual desings. Also Lowes and Homedepot use one called 20/20 for the kitchen design this is a CAD software also. Now for CAM this is the software that can convert the drawing into real parts or like the 20/02 will cut out the cabinets for you. If you watch TV and see all these car building and bike building shows on today they use a CAD software to design the custom wheels and then use a CAM software to send the drawing information to the machine to cut out the wheel. CAM is usually use with CNN machines wich mill out parts for steel or aluminum or other materials.
hope this helps

Cad (computer aided design)
Cam (computer aided Manufacture)
Cad produces drawings used from manufacture to installation in a huge variety of industries. It if used properly can automatically produce design data, parts lists and even construction programmes.
Cam is either a series of instructions to a machine to manufacture an item or series of instructions to a whole assembly line.
A good example of CAD/CAM is on the following link

An image is produced by scanning an object or photo, then a laser uses that information to produce an image within the crystal. image(CAD) - Laser (CAM)
