Yeah, I used to call my father in law "white trash" until I realized the racial implications of that. I doubt there's one non-white out of a thousand as repulsive as him, so now I just use non-race-specific words for him.

Yes, I'm sorry to say, I have. I live in New York City, and there have been times late at night when I have been walking on the street and realized that I have been more cautious when someone of one race is walking behind me than I would be with someone of another race. I would like to say that this is only based upon the look and actions of the individual themselves, but race has at times been part of my caution. Some might say that this is not being racist, but only being cautious. But, I think that if It were only being cautious, then just as much caution should be taken if the person looked like Paris Hilton.

I remember one time I walked in between two Black women who were semi in the entrance of a building I was exiting. I suppose I could have walked around them, but I walked between them. I remember that they said something like "excuse me" or something like that.

I don't know if what I did was "racist" or not, but perhaps, just perhaps had it been two white men talking, I might have walked around them. I'm not sure though.

I think I should have said, "excuse me ladies," to acknowledge my intrusion at least.

So, if by "doing something racist," you mean doing something different because of a person's race, then I'm sure we do stuff like that all the time.

Often times however we don't reflect on it, which is probably more of a shame. Like the previous answer, "I don't worry about it."

i think you always know you're racist but you're in denial and justifying it or rationalizing some erratic anger, maybe even there is real conflict at some minority person and it spills over.

I sure did. I had no idea it offended the African-American boy I worked with until his girlfriend told me, and I apoligized. I said, "Hey Boy, what's up?" I didn't know it, but in the slave days owners often called their slaves "BOY" He accepted my apology, and to thihs day we are friends.
