Good question.
A few reasons:
1. Majority of house plots are rectangular or square in shape. So building in that kind of plot will give you similar shaped house.
2. These are the most economical and efficient ways to build a house; odd shapes will be more complicated to construct and will cost more.
3. These allows for practical ways of fitting in furniture and other interior items, which incidentally come mostly in rectangular or square shapes too.
4. It is difficult to service odd shaped rooms and houses, i.e., airconditioning, heating etc. since standard solutions will not apply. Customized solutions use more materials, more resources and are costly to maintain; so rectangular or square shapes are better.
5. Remember, rectangular or sqaure shapes can be combined to create interesting shapes like 'L' or 'H' or 'T'
Hope this is helpful.

Utilisation of space
Financial comfort
Moreover, TV, Music system, Fridge, Washing machines, cooking ranges and almost all the things of domestic utility have square or rectangular exteriors. The can be comfortably placed in the interiors alongside corners and walls therefore enables comfortable movement.
The inside wall fittings such as water supply pipes and electrical supply lines run through straight and bending them can cause difficulties not only in installation but also in maintenance.
Now, all these common shapes could be gotten rid of but only when you have so much of spare funds that it doesn't hurt you else where.
I personally would prefer to spend my spare funds on having good food, drink, enjoying with friends and folks and travel to luxury hotels & exotic locations. No matter how different you make a house you still will have to move out in search of things I just mentioned, And that requires good money.

They are easiest to build quickly, inexpensively and still be the most structurally sound. While there are all kinds of buildings that have odd shapes, they require a lot more planning and materials to make sure that they do not fall in.

It is so because:-
1. They are easy to construct
2. They don't require that much planning and material. In a way they conserve time and resources.
3. They take less space ( except the bungalows, of course ) and can easily share a wall with the neighbouring house forming elegant and road-efficient roads for the residential areas.
4. They are earthquake-resistant.
5. They are safe as well as cheaper than the designer-bungalows.
6. They are economical.

Houses are mostly made in square or rectangular shape not to make the buiding look attractive but to make it earthquake resistent. This design helps in preventing collapses during earthquake and thus minimising the risk of death and injuries
