I have a five month old bunny and just discovered he has worms, i found them in his litter box a few days ago. I love my bunny very very much, but vets are expensive, i really want to help him, i was wondering if there were any other safe alternatives i can try before i have to take him to the vet.

One other thing...i have to decide very soon if i want to neuter him...should i???
any advice would really help!!

There are no safe alternatives other than going to the vet. Rabbit worming is a fairly new discovery, but it is certainly necessary. Ask your vet if they stock Panacur for Rabbits, this is what I recommend.

As for neutering - does you rabbit live with other bunnies? (hope so, they need the company). If he lives with female rabbits then of course he will need neutering - if he lives with males it probably will be necessary because they fight something awful.

Talk to your vet about both issues asap.

EDIT: Rabbits do not spray, heb218 is thinking of cats.

the vets is probably the only place to get the deworming. and yes you should neuter him. once he gets older he will start spraying (urinating on everything) he can also become aggressive with you or the other animals, and its just best for him... also it helps keep him litter box trained, sometimes if unaltered they wont go in the litter box but everywhere else. all my rabbits are fixed and its just the best thing ever. plus we dont need anymore rabbits, the shelters are overwhelmed with animals, why add to the problem. even if he wont be around a female, he could get out and impregnate another rabbit. also, the surgery is very easy. if you are concerned about the money, maybe your local humane organization or shelter can help you out.

More than likely your rabbit has pinworms very common in rabbits. Go to a Feed Store and get Piperazine-17 mix 2 Tablespoons to 1 gallon of water. Give this to your rabbit for 5 days then repeat in 30 days. This is a very safe treatment and has been given to pregnant rabbits without any problems. You may want to ask your vet about what they think about doing this. As far as neutering him, it would make him healthier & happier. Best of luck;^)

some males do spray to mark their territory. but they do it more when they are 6 to 8 months old (teenage stage). I have been marked so many times by my rabbits. don't get spraying confused with just going potty. when they are about to spray they jump up and turn around (covering a larger distance). Pin-worms go away eventually on their own.
