Should UK have a National Day of Britishness? The Fabian Society think tank members Liam Burn and Ruth Kelly, both Irish, plus Gordon Brown, Scottish, seem to think so. Is such an idea unBritish in that we do not bang on about being Brits as it's just now how we are?

Of course we should. Personally instead of staying in with my feet up on my Ikea sofa, watching american shows on my Japanese TV, I'm going to put on my giorgio Armani suit, leap into my Volkswagen, hightail it down to the Emirates Stadium, watch those young guys who play for Arsenal in the "Premier-ship", then Italian girlfriend in tow, make for the nearest Indian restaurant for a curry, accompanied by a pint of Dutch Lager, or a bottle of Bordeaux.

........mind you, don't we all do that?

What happened to St. George's Day? For non-Brits, St. George is the National Saint of England and the Red Cross of England is the flag of St. George (see the red bit in the middle of the Union Flag). The red rose is also associated with St. George and England.

When I was a child, it was a common sight to see men sporting a red rose in their button holes, while public buildings and larger houses flew the flag of England on St. George's Day which is the 23rd April.

Let's revive some of these old customs, get in the holiday spirit (but please, don't move the holiday to the nearest Monday as someone in their wisdom decided to do for May Day) and begin to take some pride in and show some loyalty to our Country.

Sorry we are not allowed to be British any more, it may upset our foreign friends, Lets not make a fuss about it, instead lets start celebrating Asian day, Poland day or if you like any other minority community day that suits them, after all we don't want to upset anyone do we. Of course the one thing everyone is forgetting if we had another public holiday, the government would be out of pockets, as we would not be at work earning money for the government to take.

You Brits should have a day of atonement, for all the harm you've done to others throughout the world.

No republican would ever support a National Brit Day - in fact, much like St. George's Day, it would do nothing but cause sectarian strife.

NO - is this not the government together with the PC brigade who has tried to ban all our National Anthems such as Land of Hope and Glory etc? We have been told repeatedly that anything remotely alluding to Britishness is of a rascist nature!

Last Night of the Proms fanatic - and proud to be British born and bred!

I believe a recent T.V. survey, showed that the Scots and the Welsh, were not really interested in this.
This being the case, why don't we have an English national day.
I would suggest 23rd of April for this.

The 24th of May was Empire Day.(an iversary of Queen Victorias birthday)When I was at school we celebrated with flag waving and national songs. It was on its last legs then as the empire was closing down to an extent. When my Mum and the Aunts were small it was a very important patriotic day.I believe Commonwealth day is still around(sometime in May ,I think the date fluctuates)we could have it then.-----with a bit of a revamp to bring it in to the 21st century.(play down the conquering bit)

It should be 28th November - the anniversary of the day the self-pitying Thatcher left Downing Street.

Ithought that either they celebrating or not they are the one rich in the world, the monarchial ceremony of the queen is enough to party the national day if they have.

Having caused the problem in the first place they now claim the right solution to solve it ... wasn't that Charles Clarke's position when he balsed up the Home Office ?

Labour in power has been a disaster.
