i live in NY, so i'd choose california obviously...
they are very different and it depends what you are into. i think that there are more fun things to do in california, but there may be more to "see" in new york.
if you go to NY you would obviously want to walk around in the city and see all the famouse landmarks, also you would want to go to the statue of liberty and maybe elis island. they are really fun tourist spots. there is also NBC studios - which is really cool also.
in california there is, of course, disneyland, hollywood, universal studios (theme park and tour), warner brothers tour (it is a very good tour - i did it when i visited california -- its especially good if you like friends because they saved the set of central perk and tehre are alot of other friends things. also if you like harry potter i would consider doing this tour.), there is the sidewalk with all of the stars on the ground with people names and accomplishments, you can walk up the steps to the oscars -- i did that too... also you can see like the tonight show with jay leno - which is very funny. you can probably get some sort of discount deal on tickets if you buy them when you go to the universal studios tour -- that's what i did.
both are really fun - ask your parents to do one this year and one next year because both are completely dif. experiences and both are extremely fun!!

Aside from NYC and Long Island I can't really think of anything else there is to see in New York. Don't get me wrong, NYC will definately have plenty to do for a full vacation and is one of the coolest cities in the nation. If you have time to explore the different parts of CA I would go there then. If you can travel between San Francisco and San Diego and check out all the great landmarks and sites in between. CA has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in addition to all the great cities and landmarks. If you go to CA and visit both northern and southern it's almost like visiting two states b/c they look and feel different from each other.
I think NYC as a city will be more impressive than any CA city b/c it's so dense and has so much character, but you will see and do more in CA overall.

I would go to California because it has way more attractions, like Disneyland, Universal Studios, Raging Waters, Six Flags, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Chinatown, Hollywood, beach, and many more. I also think that New York has many attractions like Conney Island, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, Twin tower site, time square, and other places. It depends, if you like visiting important landmarks, then New York is for you! If you like having fun and fast rides plus the beach, then California is better for you! Both ways, both places are awesome, but I myself prefer California. I live in California, but I visited New York for two weeks. I got really tired of taking the subway every day and the city was full of graffiti. It also depends on the type of climate: California= hot and New York=freezing.Good Luck in choosing !

I live in California, but was born in New York, so I feel your pain. I think that you should go to California for the summer and New York for winter if anything.
For California- It definitely depends on what part you go to.. Northern or Southern..
Southern is much more beachy whereas Northern is more winery-esque.
Good luck!

I stay in Chicago, and no I even have in no way seen any celebrity strolling down the line. I even have in no way seen or talked to Oprah. LOL, and despite if I in all probability did i would not know them... I used to artwork on the Sears Tower and that i did get to make sure Stedman (Oprah's ex) and Don King. Held a quick convo with Stedman, and took some photos with Don King.

WHAT a choice!!! They're BOTH terrific! Tell you what; since you're GOING to enjoy either one- then let "God decide": Flip a coin on it. Either way- you can't go wrong (& you can ALWAYS go & see the "runner-up" some other time down the road). Have a good trip! :)
