A DVD Drive will read CD's but not the other way around. They are made in a totally different manner and work a little different. Some DVD's have two layers that require a special drive with two lasers. This can hold 2x the info. There's also blu-ray, which uses a blue laser. Blue, has a shorter wavelength in light than red, so it can have smaller grooves in the disc, thus holding more. (Sry for rambling on...)
