All passengers arriving in the country are to declare the cash amounts in their possession, which exceed AED (40.000) Forty thousand or other equivalent currencies and traveling cheques by filling the declaration form designed for this purpose in accordance with the cash amounts declaration system in force in the country; and any passenger whose age is less than 18 years old, shall not be allowed to bring in amounts exceeding the aforementioned limit, and the amounts in his possession shall be added to the allowed limit of his master if he accompanies him.

As per the Indian customs and reserve bank regulations you can carry the foreign exchange as mentioned below.

In connection with private visits abroad, foreign exchange up to USD10,000, in any one calendar year may be obtained from an authorized dealer. The ceiling of USD10,000 is applicable in aggregate and foreign exchange may be obtained for one or more than one visit provided the aggregate foreign exchange availed of in one calendar year does not exceed the prescribed ceiling of US$10,000.

p.s. In UAE there are no restrictions to carry a reasonable amount of the local currency (AED) for visitors.

We were ALWAYS advised to bring a traveller's check instead of bringing in cash.

The UAE has not set any limits on the amount of cash that can be imported into or exported from the country. No reporting requirements exist for cash exports. However, the Central Bank requires that any cash imports over $10,900 must be declared to Customs; otherwise undeclared cash may be seized upon attempted entry into the country.

Since the UAE is a cash-based economy, it is not unusual for people to carry significant sums of cash in general. As a result, customs officials, police, and judicial authorities tend to not regard large cash imports as potentially suspicious or criminal type activities.
