It seems to me that Al Sharpton has become less of a political force and more of a media darling that does more harm to the Black Community than good. Consider his campaign against Rap. Consider his comments in the wake of the Shaun Bell shooting. If I'm honest, it appears that Sharpton really doesn't like Black people - but is really focused on gaining attention. He's also systematically alienating entire generations of young Black people from their elders. Generational politics in the Black community is hard enough without the Sharpton/Jesse Jackson factor. That said, I would really relish the day when the media no longer turned to him, when no one listened to him, when his name no longer appeared in the papers, on the TV or on my internet news services. How does one go about starting a grassroots campaign to get that man out of the limelight, to get the media to stop thinking Sharpton speaks for/to/of Black People - that he's only concerned with himself, to shut him up?!

I'm not looking to take away his right to speak. I'm just looking to take away his fame and noteriety, to get him out of the way of the camera; to get people to stop LISTENING to him as though his opinion is Gospel Truth on Black People - as though he speaks for alluvus who have Brown skin.
Consider, as more evidence, his major problem with Obama is that he's not "really" Black and that he's convincing Black people to play the race card to vote for him.... And Sharpton did what? I am convinced that his ignorance should NOT be a mouthpiece!

I have felt that way about him for a long time. I hate turning on the TV and seeing his bad perm. I feel that if somebody wants be the "representative" of the black community they should not be making racists comments about others, and should be big enough to apologize when they are wrong. I really hope people don't think that he represents the majority of black America..because he doesn't.

I absolutely agree with you, I know no black people who supports him, not even my parents who loved him back in the day. It seems like he has lost touch with what is really important in the black community, kicking out violence and promoting education. Did you hear about him publicly bashing bill cosby for saying black people needed to get educations and stop encouraging ignorance. If he really cared for the black community he would leave people like Don Imus alone and go after the real problems that face blacks. The sad thing is that the media makes it seem like the whole black community is behind him, when in fact he has a very small following and the people who do follow him do it because he uses the whole "I fought beside MLK jr." bit to make it seem like he is the last of the civil rights protestors. Hopefully people like Obama will provide a better voice for blacks in the future, and say the things that will benefit us most, even if they are hard to hear.

But if you start a campaign, sign me up!

Al Sharpton is a criminal. You should call/email the station that glorifies his ugly mug and tell them you will no longer watch unless they remove him-for good. Speak out-write letters. Nothing will change if we don't speak out. How about a tv blackout whenever he is on. HA-you see where I am going. Maybe they are afraid they will be called racists (groan). I would never want to take on Rush Limbaugh-even if you don't agree with his politics, you have to admit this man is brilliant--and he doesn't take any crap-esp. from a low life like Sharpton. Why the Black leaders don't reign him in is beyond me. He is a disgrace to his people: liar, corrupt, criminal, self serving, litigious, grandiose, narcissistic creep. Soon as you see Sharpton's twisted face, turn off the tv, call up and tell them that if they continue to interview him, you will no longer watch that channel. Amen.

Certainly the Internet is where you would start. In fact you have already started by posting this question. Thing is, The more attention you get the more he gets so you will only be helping to get him more TV time than he already does.
The media reports on what gets the most attention. Most attention equals higher ratings= higher cost to advertise= more profit.
The more attention paid to your efforts, The more attention paid to Sharpton, The more media coverage he gets. It's a viscous circle.
The best way to get a subject to drop from the media is to ignore it. Now the question would be, How do you get other people to ignore it.

What you're suggesting is a sure-fire way to get him more publicity. Love him or hate him, the man has a lot of fans out there. Have you ever seen him appear ANYWHERE without an entourage?
And how on earth does a campaign against degrading rap lyrics harm the black community?

LOL, him and Jesse Jackson, they both get on my nerves, but they crack me up though,LOL. they are stuck in the civil rights era, they can't help it and believe it or not they really think they are helping us. Don't get me started on Maxine Waters and Bernard Parks, both aren't doing a thang for our pple and they keep on getting re-elected, just cuz they are black, black pple realize just cuz they are Black doesn't mean they will actually have OUR best interests. I love my pple but you have to remember they are human too and can be just as crude. I REALLY like Obama, and yes for 1 he's Black, but gosh darn it the brotha makes a lot of sense and seems genuine in his attempt of ACTUALLY helping us, not saying that the others don't try to but it's time for a more bold and NEW approach, and Obama is getting my head rollin, so that's my 2 cents, peace

Sharpton has ALWAYS been about Sharpton, and I've been wondering when the rest of the world would catch on to that for quite some time.

As long as the media pays him more to speak than we can to keep him silent, he will keep saying what ever he is paid to say.
