ok, i guess im a pretty good dancer...

i mean, im in the highest level at my dance studio, im in the front line for all of my dances, and i have a solo this year...

but my main problem is flexibility!!! i have NONE! i mean, i can do a split but i really have to force it down, so its not really helping my grand battements or fan kicks.

i swear my strattle is like 90 degrees lol!
my fan kicks are like 90 degrees
my grand battements are actually like 100 degrees so i guess thats good :]

so my question is...how do i improve my flexibility over the summer so next year i can do alot more stuff? (like better leaps, all 3 splite...) and is flexibility really everything??

Flexibility is the ability to achieve a full range of movements (i.e.: to turn, stretch, twist and bend) without any stiffness, aching or suffering a spine or joint injury. It's also known as suppleness.
It's important because it can reduce your chances of developing arthritis

Over the summer, you can join a yoga class because it involves stretching your muscles, which is a way of achieving flexibility. You'll also learn how to stretch them properly (stretching must be done SLOWLY - 10 to 40 seconds gives the connective tissues in your muscle enough time to lengthen)
Your flexibility will increase if you maintain this as a daily routine

note:
Before doing any activity, you should stretch your muscles so that they'll be more relaxed and you'll perform with ease; stretch after doing the activity so that your muscles wouldn't be stiff.

to be come more flexible stretch in different ways eg go into the splits position and keep your back leg bent but straighten your front leg and push it down as far as it will go breath deeply whilst your doing this and hold the stretch for about 20 seconds if you do this now and again Every day then you'll eventually be able to do the slipt in about 1-2 weeks! Try and close your eyes and just listen to the music with your eyes closed just move your body in any way you feel fits i suggest trying this alone in a larger room or dance studio if you can. Work on your poise by walking gracefully with a straight back point your toes and move slowley with your head help high this will help you to relax. And always smile! even if you think you look like a complete idiot keep a brave smile on your face it imediatly will add lightness to your dance! however dont do this if its a very tense and dramatic song then try to pull facial expressions that fit the lyrics God luck! I'm a performing artiste too, and I think flexibility is really important. Or your dance moves can get limited. If you're a good dancer, like you said, you need to maintain that flexibility. This is what works for me - I stretch and do warm ups for about half hour, 5-6 times a week. You can go walking, cycling or roller blading, that strengthens you leg muscles. You can also play badminton, it stretches most parts of your body and keeps it flexible. Aerobics and ballet classes would definitely work too. But please do not assume that jogging, running or hardcore exercise is the only way out. These may actually wear you out more than otherwise. And whatever you do, here's the golden rule- Keep a schedule. Stick to it. It'll do wonders :) (Jessie, counsellor) silverlininghope@yahoo.com

no it is not.
if your in the front and have a solo, you must certainly be the best in the class. you r pretty flexible! my straddle is 180 degrees but my batmass are 90. everyone is more flexible in different way , you r better at splits and kicks and i am better at my hip flexibility. i am more flexible there.
my teacher says flexibility is not everything, because in order to be in competition teams all you really need is a good smile(24 7) , be precise , good technique, confidence, and what it takes. you need personality and fake it if you don't now it. my teacher says if you don't now wat your doing, fake it 110 percent.
sometI'mes she does not even notice im faking it. she tells every one good job, it looks great, and i did not even now wat i was doing. but if you want to become more flexible, find a wall and open your legs into 2nd position(on the floor) and press them against the wall, then spread legs on wall and hold it there and let gravity push them down. and do the basic stretches every day. morning and night.
you will get there, but it might take a couple years. it does not just come to you. i wish it did so bad. i cant wait until i reach the splits because it looks like it feels good, sitting in it, the day i reach i will praise God!

It isn't "everything", but it is an enormous part. To improve, you just need 2 just take ur time and stretch everyday. You may be eager to be flexible, but remember not to overstretch; you don't want to pull a muscle or anything. Yoga helps also, but try and get someone who knows what they are doing, it doesn't have to be a professional...try a cheerleader, dancer, etc.

go to this website it has some good stretching tips. also, flexibility isn't EVERYTHING but it is a main part of dancing. and once you are more flexible dancing will seem a lot easier.

My Stretches
1)the frog- lie on your back with the soles of you feet together and try getting your knees to touch the ground.
2)Sit in a strattle against the wall and pushing yourself closer to the wall.
3)Pretzel-cross your legs and try getting thighs on the ground with knees on top of ech other.

Good luck!

Try Pilates: not only will you get the the flexibility training similar to that of yoga, but you'll strengthen you muscles and thus improve your form-- the "everything" in dance.

I was as inflexible as uncooked spaghetti until I tried Pilates, and now, I can do just about...anything?

flexibility may be a big part of your problem. over the summer, stretch for 30 minutes everyday. just stretching. do things you would do in class. then, when you practice your splits, hold them for 30 seconds each. that should help your flexibility tremendously.

you say that you want to kick higher. i have the same problem. but it isnt my flexibility that is holding me back, it's strength. your leg might not be strong enough to get itself all the way to 180. do plies, deep ones, to help with that.

good luck!

well flexibility isn't every thing in a dance. there is cordination and the likes. but you can do with minimum flexibility. try exercising to improve your flexibility.
