Have you painted a concrete floor?

I want to have fun decorating the floor with colors, flowers, maybe polka-dots...

You can get a good concrete paint from Home Depot, either with or without a gloss and, it isn't slippery. It's no more then a paint made for concrete, you can add stuff to it like glass beads or whatever but, I used mine they way it came. it's been on my basement floor for ten years now.
I also had some for a sidewalk outside and it's still on, ten years later, it's also not any more expensive then regular paint.

There are a couple ways to go when painting concrete. Most commonly the paint salesman will recommend a latex paint specially formulated for concrete. You will want to buy some ground walnut shells additive to mix with it to make it less slippery. Latex paint will do fine for light foot traffic, but for a garage floor or a concrete floor with heavy foot traffic you will want to buy an epoxy concrete paint. In the paint section near the epoxy paint there will be packages of dots and other shapes to scatter over the epoxy while it is still wet. Instructions on how to spread the shapes will be on the package. There are garage floor painting kits available that come with the shapes included in several different color schemes. Any good hardware store will have these kits or all the parts needed for sale. You can find them at Home Depot, Lowes, or OSH to name a few places to look.

If the contrete bare it must not have a machine polished surface. A simple test is to spray the surface with water and see how quickly it absorbs. This will also tell you is there are any grease spots on the surface. As long as the water soaks up pretty quickly you're good to go.

Now, wash the surface with TSP (trisodium phosphate) and rinse with fresh water. When the surface is dry get some acrylic paint and have at 'er. The exact kind of acrylic is not important (just water based is all), you can use poster paint or art acrylics or mistints from your local paint store. Have fun and when your creative jones is satisfied put a couple of coats of a good acrylic urethane (make sure it is rated for floors) over the dried masterpiece and Bob's yur uncle.

Most commercially made paints for concrete create a super smooth finish which becomes slippery smooth when wet.
Try to get some of the fine "glass dust" and mix it into the paint. It comes in various sizes so if you want a barefoot anti slip surface you will need fine stuff.

I was a painter for the railways and we used it on our hand grips, so the shunter's hands wouldn't slip as the jumped on and off rolling stock.

Yeah you can do this, just make sure to prep the floor well and use the right paint. Also, make sure you give it a lot of dry time.
Use oil based paints as it will hold up better than latex, no matter what the salesperson says.

I know you can paint a concrete floor, but be careful. We bought a non-slip paint for our concrete floor, and apparently the concrete wasn't cured correctly or we bought the wrong type of paint and now, when it gets humid, the paint bubbles and peels.

You can buy a concrete paint from a paint shop. But it is fairly expensive . You can check out Acrylic paint, it might work. Get some of those little testpots they sell in paint shop,and try.Good Luck!
