i just got a zippo and i got a question...

when you open the lid, theres a string do i pull it out or leave it there?

is it alright to not keep the "wick" inside the zippo?

Should stick out a tiny bit from the hole in the middle. Turn upside down and fill with lighter fluid. the fluid will wick up into the string. After that, if the flame is way too big, poke the string down in there a little more. If the flame is too small, pull it out a tiny bit more.

Oh my........have you never seen an actual Zippo before now? That would be the wick....it's kinda necessary to this kind of lighter.

Leave the "wick" (string).
This "wicks" (through capillary action) the lighter fluid up and ignites to provide the flame.
