There are several breeds that are hypoallergenic...I would strongly suggest getting one of these breeds (check out the link I'm including).
Also, make sure to confine the animal to a certain part of your house (i.e. keep him/her out of your room) to minimize the effects.
The website below has alot of great information!
Good luck. It can work....my brother-in-law has bad allergies to dander and they have a dog!!!

Yes, go to an allergy specialist and get tested for pet allergies, mold, and pollen allergies. You probably have more allergies than you think.

Also, Benadryl helps people with allergies also.

You may want to try building up your immunity before getting a puppy. Or like some people said there are some dogs that are better than others as far as not triggering allergies. I imagine a few people have already given a few good suggestions in that regard.

Not only will the allergy shots help with allergies with the pets, but you'll find you won't tend to get sick nearly as often.

There are allergy shots you can get; how affective they are really depends on how allergic you are..talk to your dr. about the shot. There are hypo-allergenic breeds though. The Poodle is a breed that does not shed and is hypo-allergenic. I have a black toy poodle, she is AWSOME, and loves kids. They don't shed, but you have to have them groomed about once a month, or you'll have a mess and an unhappy dog on your hands. Really affectionate... I wouldn't give anything for my Sora. There are several more breeds thats are hypo-allergenic...do some research on it on the web...there are hairless breeds too! Oh, I don't care what anyone says the so called "designer breeds" are not breeds at all...they are mutts!!! It takes several years if not hundreds of years to actually create a breed let alone have it recognized by a kennel club that it is in fact a breed. Labradoodles, shelti-poos, Shi-poos, and all those other so called "breeds" are not breeds; they are mutts...sorry to all those other people who got ripped off. Don't believe me call AKC...what ever legite kennel club you want! There is no gaurantee that says a labradoodle won't shed, just because it is mixed with a pureblood poodle!! Idiots!

I gave my cousin a toy poodle for her birthday after reading that they were good for people with allergies. They don't have the dandruff that most people are allergic too. She it's been 5 years now and their joined at the hips. Go to the iams wed site and puppyfinder and take the quizzes to see for yourself about the dog for people with allergies. Poodles are great dogs and easy to train. I my three boys grew up with two poodles in our home. Everyday it was look mommy what I taught the dog.

There are breeds of dogs that are hypoallergtic- I believe labradoodles (mix between labradors and poodles) are an example which would be great with kids. Call your local SPCA, shelter or vet's office and they will probably have a list of these breeds. I want to say that dogs which have hair and not fur are the ones that are allergy friendly.

Get a golden doodle. They are a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle. Great behavior and no dander. So they wont give you an allergic reaction.. They are breed specifically for people with dog allergies. Like you.. :)

I have sever asthma and allergies and I have two chihuahua's and the do not bother me at all. They both are the short haired ones. I have heard of lots of people having the same result I have with Chihuahua's. Also beware depending on how old your boys are keep in mind chihuahua's are fragile little dogs even though they act 9 feet tall.

There are alot of choices now-a-days on breeds that are "hypoallergenic" so to speak. The poodle has always been a good dog to get if you have allergies. Try a cross breed with Poodle. They all have funny names like Laber-Doodle (Labrador + Poodle) or Cock-a-Poo (Cocker Spaniel + Poodle).Good Luck to ya!

I suggest asking your docter about allergy shots. i think a puppy would be a great idea. they can learn to have the reposibility of taking care of something. and they're just really cute and cuddly. just remind them that it wont stay little for long. *sigh* thats the worst part.
