Santa Cruz.
It's about 6 hours from you and is very family friendly. It has a real boardwalk (like the one in NY), with a very nice amusement park. The amusement park has two historical landmark rides (in addition to all the other ones), a state redwood park near by, of course the beach, and and a real steam train you can ride. It's also great city with plenty to do all in it's own, with very nice restaurants and a beach town/college town atmosphere. Santa Cruz is only an hour north of Monterrey with it's world class aquarium, and two hours south of San Francisco. There are plenty of other things to do with the kids, like the "Mystery Spot", the surfing museum, and a cowboy town near by.
The boardwalk is a unique experience, as it's the only one on the west coast. The kids can spend days there between the amusement park rides, the miniature golf course, bowling ally, and carnival rides.

For a short weekend trip, i would say monterey bay. You can drive along hwy 1 which is endorsed as the most beautiful scenery drive in the world from San Francisco. Once you are in Monterey bay, there are Monterey Bay Aquarium and Fisherman's Wharf, perfect spots for family. If you are a golf lover, go to 17 miles drive and pebble beach golf course is there. If you need some more concrete trip itinerary, try to do some search in Yahoo! trip planner; for accommodations, consider monterey family travel, a site dedicated for family-friendly trip planning.
Wish you a good time there!

San Diego has plenty to do. there is the Zoo, Seaworld, Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park with each and all the museums, Padres baseball, the sea coast, Mexico isn't a good distance, the Wharf and lots extra. yet another place could be to pass to Hearst fort in San Simeon or take a prepare to Solvang, the previous shaped, little German city. Catalina Island is a great place to pass too.

I'd recommend San Diego, and Anaheim. Because they have all kinds of fun things to do. Anaheim has Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm. And San Diego has Sea World. Also you might want to try going to hollywood and seeing Universal Studios and City Walk. City Walk is fun for the whole family. There's all kinds of restaurants shops and a Gameworks which is lots of fun for the kids. They have lots of video games there. Actually Gameworks is a lot of fun for the whole family to.
