This is really weird. For the past year I have run DVDs in the DVD-ROM drive of my computer without incident. When I put a Chicken Little DVD in there tonight (6/4/07), the computer didn't recognize the disk, so I took it out of the drive and repositioned it. On the next attempt of running it, the DVD broke in half and made me jump out of my seat. I took the two broken pieces out and noticed that a small piece was missing. The missing section is approximately an inch long and 1/8 of an inch wide. I am afraid to run the disk drive because that missing piece is still in there. What do you suggest that I do now?

I am thinking of turning the computer off with the CD drive left open and attempt to shake the piece out.

Well I shook the computer and only a little piece about the size of a dime came out. After I turned the computer back on, I put a blank CD in the drive and the computer was able to read it without a problem. The reading part of the drive is not damaged. After I move back to my house later this week, I will unscrew the cover of the computer and take out the DVD drive so I can extract the remaining piece of the DVD.

I forgot to mention that the DVD was dirty to begin with.

I had to report the broken DVD to Netflix. Hopefully I will not be charged for breaking it.

Could the DVD have broke from being used too much?
