This is really weird. For the past year I have run DVDs in the DVD-ROM drive of my computer without incident. When I put a Chicken Little DVD in there tonight (6/4/07), the computer didn't recognize the disk, so I took it out of the drive and repositioned it. On the next attempt of running it, the DVD broke in half and made me jump out of my seat. I took the two broken pieces out and noticed that a small piece was missing. The missing section is approximately an inch long and 1/8 of an inch wide. I am afraid to run the disk drive because that missing piece is still in there. What do you suggest that I do now?

I am thinking of turning the computer off with the CD drive left open and attempt to shake the piece out.

Well I shook the computer and only a little piece about the size of a dime came out. After I turned the computer back on, I put a blank CD in the drive and the computer was able to read it without a problem. The reading part of the drive is not damaged. After I move back to my house later this week, I will unscrew the cover of the computer and take out the DVD drive so I can extract the remaining piece of the DVD.

I forgot to mention that the DVD was dirty to begin with.

I had to report the broken DVD to Netflix. Hopefully I will not be charged for breaking it.

Could the DVD have broke from being used too much?

If you have a magnifying glass, open the drive and try locating it with that. Other than that, I'd just suggest totally powering down your computer, unplugging it, and try jiggling or shaking it out.

you can try turning the laptop off, and shake it and see if you can hear the piece of dvd in there and maybe shake it out with the dvd drive open. If it comes out, great, if not, put in a cdrom that you don't care about and see if the computer will read it. If it does then you'll be fine.

Get a new DVD-ROM drive from Newegg and replace it. There's no point in trying to jiggle it out as you simply can't. It's stuck in there and the read/write laser is probably damaged.

Insert a pointed object like needle of safety pin gently to the small hole under cd tray, and the tray will come out by pulling it...

Whoa, that's like totally awesome! It appears that Chicken Little "hatched" in there! About all you can do now is just watch half of the movie. Just explain that now you are watching, "Chicken Nuggets." Chow down! =<)
